Our Kalari is a traditional Kuzhikkalari. Kuzhi means a pit. This Kalari measures 36 X 18 feet and about 4 feet below ground level. The walls are built using the earth dug out for the pit. The pillars are cut trunks of areca nut trees and the roof is of palm leaf. All the materials for the construction are raw from Mother Nature. No man made materials like concrete or steel is used for this purpose. The possible exceptions are the Kalari lamp made of brass and the lock on the door which is of the same material. It is easy to build and maintain something built with concrete and steel. However the traditional way is the often the best.

Step 1 : The digging of the pit.

Step 2 : Mud walls built.

Step 3: Finishing touches.

Step 4: Floor beaten to level in the traditional way.

Step 5: Palm leaf roof for the authentic finish.
